Cinderella

I lived in Orlando Florida way back when Walt Disney arrived with his magical dream.  When Disney World finally opened we were some of the first to visit.  It truly is a wonderful place!

Things have changed since those early days when an entire family of five could visit for about the cost of one ticket now.  Ice cream cones, Cokes, hot dogs and popcorn were 50 cents back then!

An entire book of tickets was $4.75!

We found that we could go there often to spend a day without saving for an entire year.  It became a family tradition to go on New Year’s Eve for the fireworks (which are awesome!) and then go back on New Year’s Day for more fun.

Walt Disney World is so different in the day and night.  Every evening the place just explodes with lights and sounds and color.  There are fireworks every evening too.  Christmas time is especially beautiful.

We lived close enough to go home for the night, but wouldn’t it be lovely to stay there!  There are so many other things to see and do too.

I’m just thinking about Cinderella today since I found this beautiful clock that I might just have to have…

At “five easy payments of $49,” I would like this in my living room to remember all of the wonderful times we had at “Disney.”

Inside Out Poetry - My New Blog

I've decided to start a new blog where I can share my thoughts in poetry. I've been writing for years but have never shared my poems with others. They are a part of who I am.

I began writing poetry through the encouragement of a dear friend. I was so taken by his writing that I started just jotting my own thoughts down here and there. Once I began, I found this was a wonderful way to put my feelings into words.

Sometimes words just won't come. Feelings are too strong to express. By writing, I've learned so much about myself and the way I see the world. I'm inspired by poets of long ago too. Emily Dickinson is one of my favorites. I not only enjoy writing poetry but reading the words of others.

In the silence of my mind there are worlds of words that long to be set free. I'm inspired by nature too. If you follow along, you'll see how little things sparked my thoughts and became poems. My poetry does not rhyme. It is not professionally done by any means. It is just me and my pencil or pen, a piece of paper and a desire to remember that keeps me writing.

I hope to continue my pursuit of poetic expression. It has been a real blessing to me. If you find something that touches your heart, please feel free to comment.

Years of Decorating

I was thinking this morning of my first little apartment. I was so excited to move out of my parent’s place to one of my very own!

It was a little hole in the wall that I shared with my then best friend. We had nothing but our clothes when we moved in. Finding the necessities was all that we did. Most of those things came from our parents or were purchased at thrift stores or found at the curb.

When I got married we didn’t have a big budget. Just a few pretty wedding gifts and no furniture. We rented a furnished apartment had only the basics. It was a three room place in the back of our landlady’s home. We made it cozy by getting a cat who had six little kittens in the corner of our small closet!

As we were able, we moved to a rental house. It was small too, but was in a nice quiet neighborhood with great neighbors. Our daughter was born at that time. Bringing a baby “home” really changed our lives! My only decorating there was trying to keep the place clean enough for a little one to crawl around! I thought nothing of decor then, only being a Mommy! I’m so thankful that I was able to stay home and enjoy my little girl. We took many walks to the park and played out in our yard. She didn’t like the grass at all. She would cry if her little knees touched it. My mommy time was so precious that I didn’t even think about decorating.

Our next move was to our very own home. We were able to purchase that home due to the generosity of my husband’s contact with a contractor. I think having “my very own house” was where my interest in decorating began. We had to strip wallpaper, paint, get REAL furniture and do yard work!

This was in the 70’s and I was very interested in making MY home look “perfect.” We had avocado green appliances, gold shag carpet! We bought an expensive Ethan Allen dining room set, bedroom set and furniture for the living room. Everything had to match back then! When I think about all of that expensive furniture, I realize that I don't have ANY of it now! Times change, tastes change, styles change. My current home is filled with things that other people gave away or sold for a song. I like it better that way.

When my boys came along, my decorating came to a halt! Having two under two kept me too busy to even think about the house! Eventually, when all of the kids were in school I went back to work part time. I took some cake decorating classes and did counted cross stitch in my “spare time.” The house stayed just like it was for the most part. No time for doing anything new.

Over the years I’ve usually gone with what’s “in” when I was decorating. I wanted my house to look like those in the magazines I was reading at the time. Doing that really didn’t make my house feel like home. It only made me feel like I could entertain without feeling embarrassed.

Do you try to make your house perfect enough for guests? I was constantly cleaning and uptight if someone came over unannounced! When you have three kids it’s impossible to have the perfect house but I sure did try!

Now I am older, and hopefully wiser too. My kids are grown and each have their own place. I’m finally finding MY style. I am no longer trying to please anyone else. I’m not trying to be perfect either. I’ve learned that it doesn’t have to look like one in a magazine, it doesn’t even have to be clean. It just needs to be HOME.

I’m renting again now. Back to square one perhaps? I’ve discovered that bringing color into my world and gathering pretty things around me makes my home my sanctuary.

I’ve learned so much about myself just from the past homes I have lived in and how I’ve decorated them. It’s taken years for me to find myself but I’m getting there!

What makes me feel at home now is all of the things I’ve collected that have dear memories attached. Some of them are as simple as a handprint my youngest made me when he was five, a wooden pineapple his brother made and painted. It came with a little card that says, “I love you momy. I want you to eat this pineapple.”

I have family heirlooms and things I’ve collected over the years too. Having these things around me makes my house feel like home. What’s missing is the laughter of my children and the messes they made. Yes, I do miss their mess. Didn’t ever think I would, but I do!

I hope that wherever you are in your life, you feel a sense of peace and comfort when you walk in your front door. Make your home yours and don't worry about what other people think or do. Just enjoy what you have right now...

Blessings, Kathi

Forever Homes

Couldn’t think of a thing to post this morning.  Maybe a photo of my new grand dog?

new grand dog!

Isn’t she adorable!?  Here’s a photo of her getting her bath and another of her with her squirrel.  She’s happy to be away from the pound and living a spoiled life now!

Juno and her squirrel

Juno in the tub

Isn’t she just too cute!  Such fun to watch her doing all of the little things puppies do too!

Best part is grandma can go home and sleep soundly with her two daschunds who don’t have to go out at night!

Did anyone watch the special on HGTV last night “Leader of the Pack?”  At first I was enjoying watching the seven dogs, kids and parents all running around and going crazy.  Then as the show went on I became more and more upset.

Last night they let each of the children sleep with one of the dogs after they “puppy proofed” their rooms.   But then, they all voted on which dog had to leave.

I know this is just another “reality show” with a twist to try to get viewers, but I was NOT impressed.  Imagine giving YOUR child a dog, letting him/her sleep with it and then making him give it away?  Not nice.

I don’t care that the dogs given away were given “good” homes!  What about the children?  What about the DOG?!  How confusing for both to have a glimpse of love and security only to have it taken away!

I say, go to the pound or a rescue group, pick ONE/OR TWO that look like family and KEEP THEM!  They need FOREVER homes!  They have already spent enough time being lonely and unloved.  Adoption is the BEST.

I’ve found and rescued many animals in my life.  I have two dogs and two cats now the keep me company.  No one will ever ask them to leave!

I won’t be watching any more episodes of that show. I don’t like the message they are sending.

If you’re thinking about getting a pet, rescue one and you’ll have a forever friend.

Big hugs and puppy kisses,

Kathi

Wouldn’t it be lover-ly?

I’ve been dreaming of having my very own booth at an antique market.  Wouldn’t it be fun to gather goodies and display them to sell?  There are SO many of these markets around with so many beautiful ideas too.  I would want MY booth to be very special and stand out from the rest!

 flicker4

My mother and I used to decorate the store front of my dad’s pharmacy in Ohio.  We had so much fun changing out the displays every month.  My mother was and will always be my inspiration!  She taught me to grow and arrange flowers, taught me how to sew, helped me learn how to re-purpose things, and most of all how to appreciate the little things in life.

antique market1

I have so many things in my home now that would sell really well in an antique shop!  None, I am willing to part with however!  It seems that the things I love others like too.  Is that enough to venture in to a retail type business?

It would be nice to have some extra income to support my thrifty habits though!   How do you get started doing something like this?  Is it worth the time and expense?

flicker3

I wouldn’t want MY booth to be a copycat of the others.  What would make it special and more attractive?  Color perhaps?  A specialty of some sort?  I have way too many favorites to concentrate on ONE thing!

flicker2

Maybe an Etsy shop?  Sell on Ebay?  What about the hassles of shipping?  I don’t think I would want to spend so much time at the post office!

Just dreaming here this morning. Time to go to work!

What are you dreaming about today?

A few of my favorite things

I walked around the house the other day and took some photos of some of the things I’ve collected over the years.  Thought I would share them with you…

Little wooden boxes.  I use them to store colored pencils, pens etc.  The metronome was a gift from a friend.  The small dark box contains some tiny wooden candle holders that are painted like little people!

I love the way the sun shines in the front door!  I’ve changed up the wall where the clock is and moved my buffet there.  The buffet was found inside a shed (free) at a house I rented in Florida.  The owner had used it as a tool cabinet.  I refinished it and it looks great!  Can’t get a good photo of it this morning.  Sorry.

I found these three embroidered florals at thrift stores.  My dad made this cute wooden stool and I just painted it blue!  The towel was a gift from one of my patients.  Isn’t it fun to see what you’ve collected over the years and how they all find a place of their own?

Hope you have a beautiful day!

Dinner and a DEAD battery

I decided I would treat my self to a take-out dinner at Logan’s Roadhouse Grill tonight.  I called in my order - sirloin steak, baked sweet potato and broccoli (YUM) then I drove over to pick it up.

When I got back into my car it wouldn’t start.  Just a weak “click” and nothing else.  Click click click.  Nothing.  There was no one around to help me so I called AAA.  I’ve been a member for 30 years so they had better come help me fast!  My food was getting cold!

I tried to eat in the car while I waited.  Have you ever tried to eat steak with a plastic knife and fork?  Don’t bother…

aaa

Before long, my hero arrived and jump started my car.  He informed me that the battery was dead, kaput, done for.  I’m not surprised since it’s the original 2004 battery that came with the car.  Guess I shouldn’t complain!

He offered to put in a new one for me for $129.  I said, “thanks, but no thanks” and drove off to the auto parts store down the street.  It was after 5 pm and I didn’t think they would be open, but they were!

advanced auto parts

A really nice guy sold me a new battery for $89 and installed it for FREE!  Can’t beat that!  In less than 10 minutes too!

Later while I was enjoying my cold and really tough steak I thought, “you know, I could have been stuck at home tomorrow morning trying to go to work when this happened.  I could have been somewhere else and not had dinner sitting beside me.  I even had a cold diet Pepsi with me so I didn’t get thirsty while I waited for AAA to come.  The weather was perfect - warm and sunny.  AAA came right away and the guy at the auto parts place was so helpful . . .

God was watching over me and taking care of me this evening just like He always does.  It’s just that sometimes I fail to notice His goodness or say “thank You” as often as I should.

“It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Thy name, O Most High.  To declare Thy lovingkindness in the morning, and Thy faithfulness at night.”  Psalm 92:1

Not one, but two!

This is the quilt I got today at my neighbor’s garage sale for $3. Seems they had a lot of things for $3 . . .

When I came home and opened the bag, I found that there was not just ONE quilt, but TWO! They are BOTH handmade, have lovely stitching and the prettiest prints!

There are a few small stains but I think with some care they will come out pretty as can be!

Get to know your neighbors! Not only will you make a new friend, or two, you just may find some treasures when they have a garage sale!
